Course Description

Maqasid al-Shari’ah (Objectives of Islamic Law) are fundamental principles which provide answers to the questions of Why, What, and How about the Islamic Law. Maqasid include the wisdom behind rulings, the intended purposes, and moral concepts upon which the Law is based. The understanding of these principles will allow an individual to view Islamic Law in a holistic, moral, and multi-dimensional lens enabling one’s own critical thinking when approaching differing rulings and their applicability.

This course will make accessible a science crucial to our everyday practice of Islam, that is seldom taught for an audience of laypeople.  It will have a relevant and practical application for decision-making in our everyday lives.  The seminar will foster critical thinking and analytical skills needed for meaningful application of Islam to our lives.
